UTTARAKHAND LITCHI REACHES EUROPE: FIRST CONSIGNMENT EXPORTED FROM DEHRADUN TO ITALY
BY -USHA RAWAT
Dehradun, June 18, 2026: In a significant boost to India’s agri-export sector and Uttarakhand’s horticulture economy, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, facilitated the first-ever export consignment of fresh Uttarakhand litchi to Italy on June 18, 2026.
The landmark shipment marks the entry of Uttarakhand’s premium litchi into the European market and underscores the growing global acceptance of India’s high-quality fresh fruits. The inaugural consignment, comprising one metric tonne of fresh litchi sourced from growers in Dehradun and adjoining areas, was dispatched to Italy, opening new opportunities for fruit exporters and farmers in the Himalayan state.
The export is expected to strengthen India’s footprint in international fresh fruit markets while enhancing the visibility of Uttarakhand’s horticultural produce among European consumers.
Premium Quality Driving Global Demand
Dehradun litchi enjoys a strong reputation across India for its distinctive sweetness, attractive bright-red colour, delicate aroma and superior pulp quality. The region is home to renowned varieties such as Rose Scented, Calcuttia and Bedana, which are highly valued for their taste and shelf appeal.
Uttarakhand’s favourable agro-climatic conditions, fertile soil, abundant water resources and moderate summer temperatures provide an ideal environment for litchi cultivation. Districts such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar contribute significantly to the state’s annual litchi production and have emerged as important centres for commercial horticulture.
Better Returns for Farmers
A key outcome of the export initiative has been improved income for growers. According to officials associated with the programme, farmers received prices approximately 25 per cent higher than prevailing domestic market rates for export-grade fruit. The premium pricing is expected to encourage farmers to adopt better orchard management practices, improved post-harvest handling and international quality standards.
Experts believe that access to overseas markets can help reduce dependence on domestic demand fluctuations and create a more stable income stream for fruit growers.
Collaborative Effort Across the Value Chain
The successful shipment was facilitated through the coordinated efforts of APEDA, the Government of Uttarakhand, exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), logistics service providers and other stakeholders. The initiative demonstrates the importance of strong collaboration across the agricultural value chain in enabling international market access for perishable produce.
Special attention was given to harvesting, grading, packaging, cold-chain management and transportation to ensure that the fruit met stringent European quality and phytosanitary requirements.
Boost to India’s Agri-Export Mission
The export of fresh Uttarakhand litchi to Italy represents an important step in diversifying destinations for India’s fresh fruit exports. It also aligns with the Government of India’s broader objective of increasing agricultural exports and integrating farmers with global value chains.
Over the past few years, APEDA has actively supported the export of fresh fruits, vegetables and value-added agricultural products through market development initiatives, quality assurance mechanisms, infrastructure support and capacity-building programmes. The authority has been working closely with state governments and producer groups to enhance export readiness and improve farmers’ access to high-value international markets.
Officials believe that the successful export to Italy could pave the way for larger shipments to other European countries in the coming seasons, creating new opportunities for Uttarakhand’s horticulture sector and further strengthening India’s reputation as a reliable supplier of premium agricultural produce.
