India is currently the second-largest wheat producer in the world, after China. According to the data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), India produced approximately 107 million metric tons of wheat in the 2020-2021 crop year. However, it is important to note that India’s wheat production is heavily influenced by weather conditions and can vary significantly from year to year.
The latest wheat production data of India is for the crop year 2020-2021. According to the Fourth Advance Estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, the country produced a record 109.24 million metric tons of wheat in that year. This is higher than the previous record of 107.86 million metric tons achieved in the 2019-2020 crop year. The increase in production is attributed to favorable weather conditions and higher adoption of improved technologies and practices by farmers.
The major importer countries of Indian wheat include Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, and African nations such as Kenya, Mozambique, and Yemen. These countries import Indian wheat to meet their domestic demand for food and feed. In recent years, Bangladesh has emerged as the largest importer of Indian wheat, accounting for a significant share of India’s total wheat exports. Other countries such as the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia have also imported wheat from India in smaller quantities. However, it is important to note that India’s wheat exports are relatively small compared to the exports of major wheat-producing countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia.
