Rare leopard cat spotted in Maharashtra’s Pench Tiger Reserve for the first time!
In huge news, Maharashtra’s Pench Tiger Reserve has recorded the sighting of an elusive leopard cat, scientifically known as Prionailurus bengalensis. It has been sighted for the first time, as confirmed by a senior forest official on Sunday. This particular cat, belonging to the Felidae family, is known for its striking resemblance to leopards in terms of body colour.
The revelation of the leopard cat’s presence within the reserve was made possible through camera trapping, in a statement by Deputy Director Prabhu Nath Shukla. This sighting marks a significant milestone, being the first of its kind in central India.
Shukla elaborated that a camera installed in the vicinity of Narahar village in Pench, Nagpur district, captured an image of the elusive feline within the confines of a seasonal stream. This notable observation signifies the inaugural documentation of the leopard cat’s existence in central India.
Highlighting the biodiversity of felids in India, he said that the nation hosts 15 species of wild cats, accounting for over 40% of global felid diversity. The leopard cat, characterized by its adaptive flexibility, holds the status of being the second most prevalent felid species in India after the jungle cat. Previously believed to be absent in central India, its newfound presence challenges previous assumptions.
This breakthrough discovery is anticipated to catalyze further research into the distribution patterns of felids, a subject that has hitherto received relatively scant attention. Understanding the distribution of wildlife is imperative for formulating comprehensive conservation strategies, underscoring the importance of such findings.
Situated along the Pench River, the Pench Tiger Reserve spans an area of 740 sq km, predominantly featuring teak trees in its flora. The reserve serves as a vital corridor connecting various tiger reserves in the region, including Melghat Tiger Reserve, Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, Pench Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh), and Kanha Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh), facilitating wildlife movement across landscapes.
