THE WAR :: HERE ARE IMAGES FROM IRAN, ISRAEL, LEBANON AND ELSEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. ( See in In Pictures and Videos)

The American and Israeli attacks on Iran during the weekend spread into a wider regional conflict this week, with Israel and Hezbollah trading strikes after a fragile yearlong truce broke down.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military said it had seized parts of southern Lebanon. Explosions have rocked the outskirts of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, this week. And the U.S. State Department closed its embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait after drone attacks.

On Sunday, Iran’s government vowed to avenge the death of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was among those killed in the coordinated U.S. and Israeli attacks that began on Saturday. Missiles and drones flew on Sunday, with strikes on Iran continuing and Israel coming under retaliatory fire from Tehran, which has also targeted Persian Gulf countries that host American military bases.

In Tehran, large crowds gathered on Sunday to mourn Ayatollah Khamenei. Other Iranians celebrated the violent end of his authoritarian rule, which lasted nearly 37 years.

In Israel, people took shelter as sirens warned of incoming Iranian drones and missiles. Hundreds of people have been killed in Iran, according to the Iranian Red Crescent.
