पूर्वोत्तर में शांति और समृद्धि का एक नया युग : A New Era of Peace and Prosperity in the North East

By -Usha Rawat

The North East region of India comprises eight states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura – each with its own distinct history and identity. The region shares its borders with Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Bangladesh and has been one of the most sensitive regions in India. Since 1947, the history of this region has been marred with insurgency and under development.

An era of peace has dawned in the North Eastern region of India since 2014 when insurgency violence has seen a sharp decline of 80 percent and civilian deaths have seen an 89 percent drop. Added to this is the achievement of surrender by six thousand militants since 2014, he underlined.

The terrain, the state of socio-economic development and historical factors such as
language/ ethnicity, tribal rivalry, migration, control over local resources and long and porous
international borders have resulted in a fragile security situation in the North Eastern States.
This has resulted in violence, extortion and diverse demands by various Indian Insurgent
Groups (IIGs) which maintain safe havens/camps in neighbouring countries. The insurgent
outfits indulge in violent and terror activities and intimidate people with arms in order to
achieve their objectives /demands. They maintain cross-border links, procure arms, recruit
and train their cadres, and indulge in unlawful activities.
